TRAIL TOURS
CHIANG MAI
The province of Chiang Mai, located in the north of the country, has become in a few years the capital of trail running in Thailand and a recognized spot throughout Asia. In less than 10 years, inspired by the work done by TMT, an ever-increasing number of runners have come to discover the trails relieved by our agency. Little by little, races and practitioners multiplied. International runners were quickly won over by the atmosphere of the mountains around Chiang Mai. Easy access, magnificent landscapes of jungle and rice fields, many national parks, mountains as far as the eye can see, the highest peaks in the country, stages in bamboo villages, trail running in Chiang Mai is a unique experience to live. Proof of the lightning recognition of its status, the city hosted the World Trail Championships in 2022 and the UTMB race in Doi Inthanon became the Asia Pacific final of the World Series circuit.
The province of Chiang Mai has the most beautiful national parks and the highest mountains in Thailand. The region is populated by many ethnic tribes (Karen, Lahu, Hmong, Lisu) whose bamboo and teak-wood villages offer so many choice stops for nights in the mountains. The opportunities for trail running are therefore immense and the variety of landscapes infinite. In 10 years, Thailand Mountain Trail has created multiple exclusive trail routes. From one to five days, from 20kms to 30kms per day, for beginners and intermediate (Trail Tour) or advanced (Ultra Tour) runners, in stages or from a base camp, we want to show you what Chiang Mai best offers. With our status as a trail pioneer and our knowledge of the mountains, our stays are unique… like the experience you will have.
It’s the perfect trip to discover trail running in the jungle in a tropical country. The route was previously used by monks and hill tribes to communicate with Chiang Mai city. Through deep jungle, it goes high in the mountains to remote villages located at the foothill of Doi Pui summit. This is our most accessible trip, suitable for all types of runners (including beginners).
1 DAY
This challenging trip is held in the same area as the previous one on a higher and longer route. The target is to reach the two main summits of the area, Doi Pui and Doi Pa Klong, located respectively at 1600-1700m above sea level. In almost 30kms, trail runners will start from the valley at the doorstep of Chiang Mai and will run up and down to a sea of green mountains all around.
1 DAY
Two unforgettable days in the Doi Pui Suthep National Park to discover and run on this famous trail running playground where the World Championship has been organized in 2022. This beautiful and iconic area close to the city center of Chiang Mai has everything to please trail runners : a 1st day lower in the mountains on wild jungle trails and a 2nd day higher in the sky on ridges and summits with views.
2 DAYS
This 2-day trip is a great opportunity to discover the unique atmosphere of trail running in tribal areas. The route is made from old footpaths created by Karen people to communicate between villages and fields. Through wild jungle and rice paddies, it goes to a charming village where we spend the night in a local family, before running higher the 2nd day. With less than 25K per day on an easily accessible path, this trip is dedicated tor all types of runners.
2 DAYS
This trip is a real adventure! It is dedicated to trail runners with some experience. It starts gently on easy trails, then it plunges little by little into a wild county. If the 1st day is very comfortable (large footpath and night in a resort *** with pool), the atmosphere fully changes on the two following days. On wild trails through a dense jungle, we cross several valleys before we finally reach the beautiful Karen villages and valleys surrounded by hills and rice paddies.

Our best seller… for a reason! The Tribal Haute Route goes to the highest mountains of Chiang Mai in remote hill-tribe areas. On technical and steep trails that we have relived, we have the chance to discover Hmong, Lahu, Lisu ethnic minorities. We will stop in their bamboo and wood villages to eat and sleep. The last part of the route around Chiang Dao offers stunning view on the 3rd highest summit of Thailand.
2 DAY
This trip is held in a remote and controlled area barely known by other tourists or Thai runners. Thanks to our long experience here, we have established deep relationships with local people and tribes. They helped us to discover, relive and maintain these ancient footpaths between the two summits of Doi Nang (1825m) and Doi Luang (2225m). We will run up and down here, in the middle of the Lisu high country, surrounded by steep cliffs and green mountains.
2 DAY
This challenging 3-day trip is dedicated to trail runners with experience and a strong level. It starts with 2 long first days on technical trails in remote hill-tribe areas. It gives us the opportunity to meet with many Hmong, Lahu and Lisu minorities alongside the route. We will stop eating and sleeping in two villages at 1400m high before running the last day around Doi Luang Chiang Dao.

Thailand Mountain Trail has created TMT.1 in 2015 with the objective to become the 1st GR (Great Route) of Thailand. With 150K and 8000M elevation gain between Chiang Mai city and Chiang Dao summit, this is the one and only long hiking footpath of Thailand. We will run the whole route in 5 days with 20-30K per day and sleep in resorts or mountain villages alongside the path. It’s a real and big adventure with unbelievable landscapes and trails dedicated to confirmed runners only.
